The Super Silky Set and The C.R.O.W.N Act
I constantly strive to eliminate discrimination of all forms and elevate the culture in everything I do. At this age, I am not just motivated by money, the passion of making lives better fuels my engine. When I learned about the C.R.O.W.N Act I knew there was something we could do at Revival that would support everything the act represented, bring more attention to the cause, and take one more step towards a more inclusive sense of hospitality. If DOVE, the soap company, can be a co-founder of legislation like this, then what can WE do?
In one of our many brainstorming, fast-paced walking and talking conversations, I suggested to Donte Johnson (Hotel GM) that we offer natural haircare products to our guests in response to learning about the act. It was one of the easier sells. When usually the ideas can require way more persuasion. We both have natural hair and so did many of the other employees in the hotel. We’ve both also faced hair-based discrimination in our lives. So, I reached out to a friend, Nikki Mighty of Spiked Orchids to create a custom bonnet and pillowcase to be sold at our Corner Store Gift Shop. From personal experience, it’s the best bonnet I’ve ever used. Feel free to laugh at the selfie I took in bed, but that was the best I could do. The other pics are clearly from a professional (Ryan Rhodes aka @DJimpulse and Director of Content and Sonic Identity) and Revival team member Manasseh Joyner. Come check it out yourself. We sell them together for $80 or separate for $45 each – so just buy them together and support a local maker while keeping your baby hair safe.
Below is from the press release Profiles PR wrote on it. I thought it was dope so I had to include it below:
“We’re thrilled to launch a new addition to our Corner Store Gift Shop that ensures the hotel is welcoming and comfortable to all,” said Revival’s Director of Culture and Impact Jason Bass, who spearheaded the product line.
An award-winning JdV by Hyatt Hotel, Revival has collaborated with Mighty to bring Super Silky Bonnets and Pillowcases exclusively to the shelves of its gift shop. Adorned with intricate designs, the new additions are a vibrant clapback at a hospitality industry – and society, as a whole – that fails to consider constituents of color.
Reflecting the hotel’s focus on Impact Hospitality, Super Silky Bonnets and Pillowcases are a rallying cry for The CROWN Act. Standing for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” the actprohibits race-based hair discrimination, which is the denial of employment and educational opportunities because of hair texture or protective hairstyles.
With 18 states signing The CROWN Act into law, the team at Revival is committed to protecting the rights of Black people nationwide through advocacy and visibility. Although the law has been adopted in Maryland, travelers visiting the hotel are encouraged to demand their legislators do the same.
The launch of Super Silky Bonnets and Pillowcases ensures maximum levels of comfort for guests during their stays, drives conversations forward to a world free of hair discrimination and demonstrates Revival’s commitment to being a space that is welcoming to all. The hotel’s social impact efforts include curated programming and events such as educational workshops, thought-provoking conversations, art pop-ups and spirit-free cocktail tastings. Revival prides itself on being more than a hotel through partnering with local minority businesses, engaging in philanthropic efforts, empowering the youngest members of society and assisting the community wherever the need may be. BIPOC-led partnerships include those with Lor Tush, Sole Wash, Black Acres Roastery and Art of Balance Wellness Spa.
